Symbols, palimpsests, marks and scratches on every day Ancient Egyptian artifacts, beyond the gold and splender of Museum displays are sources for new work. Japan’s richest design source, the natural world and its extensive range of beautiful colour, strong metaphysical and cultural meanings, are also inspirations.

Images are sewn together like threads. Hovering instinctually over the paper, they ascribe magical powers to a surface, empowering, protecting or suggesting danger. No figure begins with a specific person in mind. There has been a natural process of simplification recently,  but an explosion of colour and the remains of fashion influences are never far away.

Cate Parr is a British artist, working predominantly in watercolour and ink. Currently based in Edinburgh, Scotland, Cate divides her time between the UK and California.
